🦵 VMO vs VML: Activation & Function Summary
🔹 VMO (Vastus Medialis Oblique):
Fiber type: Predominantly fast-twitch
Activation:
Most active in the last 15° of knee extension
Preferentially recruited during closed-chain and concentric movements
Activated through adduction due to its connection to the adductor magnus
Function: Pulls the patella medially to stabilize during terminal extension
🔹 VML (Vastus Medialis Longus):
Fiber type: Predominantly slow-twitch
Activation:
Most active between 70–90° of knee flexion
Recruited more during eccentric contractions
Pulls the patella medially and upwards
Function: Provides deep, postural control of the patella through a wider range of flexion
🔹 Training Considerations:
Longer more extended position target lower regions of the muscle
Shorted more fixed activate higher regions of the muscle
Compound movements go through both
