🦵 VMO vs VML: Activation & Function Summary

🔹 VMO (Vastus Medialis Oblique):

  • Fiber type: Predominantly fast-twitch

  • Activation:

    • Most active in the last 15° of knee extension

    • Preferentially recruited during closed-chain and concentric movements

    • Activated through adduction due to its connection to the adductor magnus

  • Function: Pulls the patella medially to stabilize during terminal extension

🔹 VML (Vastus Medialis Longus):

  • Fiber type: Predominantly slow-twitch

  • Activation:

    • Most active between 70–90° of knee flexion

    • Recruited more during eccentric contractions

    • Pulls the patella medially and upwards

  • Function: Provides deep, postural control of the patella through a wider range of flexion

🔹 Training Considerations:

  • Longer more extended position target lower regions of the muscle

  • Shorted more fixed activate higher regions of the muscle

  • Compound movements go through both
